Yon “Lamonte” Fisher was born July 31, 1950, to Bud William Fisher and Vivian Marie Wallace in Peoria, Illinois. At a very early age they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he lived his entire life. Also at an early age, he received Christ in his life. Lamonte was baptized at First Samuel Baptist Church and there he enjoyed singing in the choir. He attended Indianapolis Public School #41 and Shortridge High School. In 1967, he married Jacqueline, the love of his life. They have three children – Tonya, Voneé, and Jason. Lamonte was employed with General Motors for 30 years. After retirement he had various jobs including a Crown Hill Mortuary driver and a Sam’s Club greeter. He also took care of his mother until his health no longer allowed him to do so. He was a longtime member of New Light Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Ananias Robinson and Calvin Allen, Jr. He later moved his membership to Eagle Creek Community Church, first under Pastor Van Birrer and now Pastor Ray Harmon. At Eagle Creek Community Church he served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher for school-aged children, which he enjoyed very much. After becoming ill, he continued to sit in the classroom and help when he could. All the children knew him as ‘The Candyman.’
Lamonte was a family man, fun-loving in character, and a wonderful provider. He loved his family and always wanted to be in their presence. He was enamored with his biological children and all the children he met. He enjoyed cooking, baking, and coined himself the ‘grill master.’ In his spare time, he loved racing, building, and repairing automobiles and called himself the ‘junk yard dog,’ because he could take junk and make it a treasure.
On Sunday, August 27, 2023, Lamonte exchanged time for eternity. He was preceded in death by his father Bud Fisher and two siblings – Francine Madden and Eric Fisher. To cherish his memory he leaves Jacqueline Fisher, his wife of 56 and a half years; his loving mother Vivian Wallace; his devoted children – Tonya Drake, Voneé (James) Williams, and Jason (Tiffany) Howard; three sisters – Alva Sadler, Marsha Williams, and Kandi Fisher; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
