Wladyslaw S. Augsburger

May 8, 1926 — November 20, 2014

Wladyslaw (Walter) S. Augsburger of Greenwood Indiana, passed away after a long illness on Nov 20, 2014. Walter was born in Sambor, Poland (now Ukraine) on May 8, 1926. He was separated from his parents at the age of 16 by the advance of the Russian Army into his hometown and reunited with them 17 years later when his parents sponsored him and his family to immigrate to the USA. Walter and Helene became US citizens five years after arriving in the US. The shortest allowable time. Walter served in the Polish army from 1944 to 1955. He and his wife, Helene, were married 64 years. After spending nine months in a displaced persons' relocation center in Germany, he and his young family immigrated to the US in 1958, settling in Indianapolis. Walter loved to travel with his family and managed to visit most of the US and Canada. He and his wife worked at Western Electric on Shadeland Avenue from the 1960's to 1985. They retired from Western Electric when the plant closed. Upon his retirement, he explored a passion for woodworking and created everything from furniture to rocking horses. During his active life he loved to dance, ride bikes and travel. He encouraged his children to learn music and loved listening to them practice or play. Walter is survived by his wife Helene (Galus) Augsburger, daughter Urszula (Paul) Schierenberg, and son Richard (Mary) Augsburger. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Kathryn (Scott) Kilker, Kristen Augsburger, Richard Scott (Kimberly Fehremand) Augsburger, and 3 great-grandchildren, Aidan, Lylah and Scarlett. Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Greenwood at 335 S. Meridian St. Greenwood, IN 46143 from 6-8PM on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday morning at 11am, also at the church, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
