William Smart

February 12, 1922 — July 15, 2012

William L. Smart 90, of Indianapolis, IN passed away on July 15th surrounded by his loving family. Bill worked for Ransburg Corporation in Indianapolis for approximately 45 years as an employee or consultant in various engineering capacities, including Corporate Technical Director. He was awarded 12 US Patents and 50 corresponding foreign patents. He graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology where he played basketball for four years and was captain his senior year. Bill served in World War II as a US Navy fighter pilot aboard the USS Randolph and saw action in the first carrier air raids on Tokyo, as well as the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. He served as President of the Washington Township School Planning Committee and as a member of the Washington Township School Board. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Jordan YMCA; was the treasurer of the Indianapolis Jazz Club for over 30 years, was an editor of the Jazz Notes publication and Editor of the publication of the Electrostatics Society of America. Bill Smart was a good man. He had a great sense of humor, made people laugh, was well liked and was a kind and giving person. He was a good husband, father and friend. He loved his Dixieland jazz and was happiest when with his family and friends. He is the widower of Alice V Smart and has two daughters, Kristin Hoffman of Cincinnati, OH and Lisa McCammon of Indianapolis, and two sons Michael Smart, of Fishers, IN and Jeffrey Smart, of Indianapolis. He also has 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. God Bless you Dad, we will miss you like crazy. You will remain in our hearts forever with the fondest of memories. A memorial service will be July 20, at 11:00 AM, in the Chapel at Hoosier Village, 5300 W 96th Street, Indianapolis, IN.
