William John Chumley, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2015. He was born on May 18, 1933 in Valparaiso, IN to LeRoy and Gertrude Chumley. Bill was a graduate of Valparaiso High School and the IU School of Journalism. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Bill first worked as a Sports Editor for the Indianapolis Star, and in Public Relations for AUL. Most recently, he worked as a Purchasing Agent for IUPUI, retiring in 1992. Bill was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Sigma Delta Chi (the Society of Professional Journalists). He was a longtime member of Speedway Baptist Church, a devoted family man and an avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Bernice (Carter) Chumley; sons, Jonathan (Joni Pasla) Chumley and Mark (Bea) Chumley; granddaughter, Danica Chumley; and former spouse, Dell Morgan. Bill is also survived by his brother, Howard "Hod" Chumley and his wife, Patricia; along with his feline companion, Boots. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 3-7pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway. In lieu of flowers, friends are strongly encouraged to make a contribution in Bill's memory to one of the following organizations: American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, Salvation Army, Eagle Creek Animal Clinic or the Indianapolis Humane Society.
