William H. "Bill" Jacobson, Jr., 89, of Indianapolis and formerly of Chicago, IL, died December 24, 2014 at Clarebridge of Carmel, IN. He was born April 28, 1925 in Chicago, IL the son of William H. and Florence (Engel) Jacobson. He enlisted in the USNR on July 1, 1943, and entered the V-12 Program at Middlebury College. Bill attended Midshipman School at Notre Dame and was commissioned ensign in March 1945. He served on the USS LSM-8 and USS LST-772 and participated in the movement of North Korean POW's to the island of Koje Do. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Industrial Engineering and worked as a steel sales representative for Youngstown Sheet and Tube- Brainard Steel Div. and retired from Wisconsin Steel Division as Eastern Regional Sales Manager. He was a member of the Theta XI Fraternity-Alpha Beta Chapter at the University of Illinois. He was a longtime member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was a member of Millersville Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. CDR Jacobson retired from the USNR on April 28, 1985 after 20 years of service. His awards included the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Navy Reserve Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, WWII Victory, Asia Occupation, National Defense, Korean Service and the United Nations Service Medals. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anna May Jacobson and a sister, Lorraine Johnson.
He is survived by 4 daughters, JoAnn Jacobson, Susan Vetter (Frank), Cyndi Gianneschi, (Irv) and Carolyn Strain (Doug); 6 grandchildren, Jacob, Cory, John, David, Christina and Laura; and 4 great-grandchildren, Brittney, Alyssa, Ashton and Lucy; and several nieces and nephews.
No public services will be planned. Flanner and Buchanan-Carmel is entrusted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Hamilton or the American Heart Association.
