William Davis Hammel, 73, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 20, following complications from advanced heart failure. He spent his final seven weeks at home in hospice care, surrounded by the love of his family, who meant everything to him.
Born in Huntington, Indiana, Bill was a 1971 graduate of Huntington North High School, earned an undergraduate degree from Indiana University and later graduated from Indiana University School of Law.
Bill’s professional journey took him through several paths before he found a fit at Delta Faucet, where he built a foundation for the next chapter of his life. After the birth of his youngest daughter, Mallory, Bill set his sights on a new goal: earning a law degree so he could better advocate for her. He continued working full time while attending law school at night, balancing the demands of work and his studies. Upon graduating, he accepted a position with Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis.
But it was his commitment to his family that gave Bill’s life its greatest purpose. He was a tireless advocate for those he loved, always willing to put in the work to help create better opportunities for them and others. He became a passionate speaker for United Way, sharing his family’s story to help raise funds for individuals with intellectual disabilities. He served on the Washington Township School Board, helping shape the educational opportunities available to his children and their peers. And he coached each of his children in youth sports, investing his time and energy in their growth both on and off the field.
In everything he did, Bill was motivated by his love of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Betty (Davis) Hammel and his sister Joy Kennedy and brothers Bob and Jim Hammel.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathy (Miller) Hammel; his children, Melanie (Dean) Heaviland of Speedway, IN, Craig (Abby) Hammel of Raleigh, NC, Michelle (Clint) Brand of Lafayette, IN and Mallory of Indianapolis; and his 12 grandchildren: Ben and Joey Heaviland; Olivia, Grant and Jack Hammel; and Brooke, Landon, Connor, Jacob, Reagan, Carson and Henry Brand. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Service Details Services will be held on Saturday, October 24, at our Flanner Buchanan-Speedway location. Public Visitation: 1:00–3:00 p.m. Celebration of Life: 3:00 p.m., immediately following the visitation.
