William E. Brooks

February 17, 1953 — September 16, 2014

William (Will) E. Brooks, Jr., 61, lifetime resident of Indianapolis, IN, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2014. Born on February 17, 1953, Will was the son of William E. Brooks, Sr., and Mary Brooks. A graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology in Chicago with an associate of science degree in electrical engineering, Will worked from 1978 to 2012 at RCA (later operating under the names of GE, Thomson Consumer Electronics/Thomson Multimedia and Technicolor USA, Inc.) before retiring in 2012. Will's 34 years in safety engineering involved fabrication and trouble-shooting of prototype televisions and test equipment. He also created CNC (Computer Numeric Controls) software and fabrication techniques to produce engineering samples of deflection yokes and integrated high-voltage transformers, which ultimately were used in product manufacturing in other countries. His reliability and stress measurements on individual electronic components and assemblies were used in television power supplies and deflection systems installed in products around the world. From prototype to design stage, he performed various types of safety evaluations in such products as televisions, audio/video players and set top box products. He worked extensively with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to ensure that safety standards were met in all products and components. He also worked with litigation teams to conduct tests on products returned by consumers. Will was highly respected by his colleagues. He held several patents and was an avid and longtime ham radio operator (N9MUJ). Other interests included meteorology and astronomy. He also was a great cook who could make a mean stir-fry. Will is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Chuck Brooks. His loving survivors include half-sister Sandee Bond (Randy) in Westfield, IN; nephew Matt Eversman (Jody) in New Albany, IN; grand-nephews Dylan and Jordan; grand-nieces Brooke and Kaleigh; beloved and tough-guy cat J.T. (Mr. Jinks); and close friend Lisa Coffey. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be held at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North at 2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Drive on Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 10 am to 1 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1 pm, after which there will be a time of food and fellowship with the family. Burial will be private. Online condolences may be made at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
