William D. Richter

July 19, 1940 — December 28, 2011

William D. Richter, 71 of Carmel, went to be with The Lord Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at his home. Bill was born July 19, 1940 in Lebanon, IN. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Civil Engineering and started working for the State Highway. His career included positions as a surveyor, contractor, engineer and executive at various firms before being a partner at Certified Engineering in Indianapolis for the past 20 years. One of Bill's passions was competing at the highest levels of amateur fast pitch softball. Later with his son, their pitcher/catcher battery included a number of championships. Bill was later inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame. Bill's other passion was golf, playing in many amateur tournaments in the Indianapolis area. When younger, he was runner-up to the eventual club champion, Dan Burton, at the Old Sycamore Springs Golf Course. Bill held memberships at Christ Community Church, the American Society of Engineers, Scottish Rite, Millersville Masonic Lodge, where he served as Past Master. Friends and family are invited to gather from 5:00 – 8:00 pm Monday, January 2, 2012 at Flanner and Buchanan-Carmel, where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 Tuesday, January 3. Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy D. Richter; children, Holly D. (Chris) Layer and Dave (Linda) Richter; mother, Mavilla Richter; 5 grandchildren; sister, Brenda L. Durflinger. Memorial contributions may be made to Wheeler Mission, Salvation Army or a charity of the donor's choice.
