William James Camfield

William “Bill” James Camfield, at 67 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully on Thursday night, July 18, 2024 at his home with his family by his side.

Bill was born on March 23, 1957 in Mason, Michigan, a son of Eugene James and Mary Delores (Gabel) Camfield. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Bill married Karen Hodel on June 6, 1981 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is survived by his wife of 43 years: Karen Camfield of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bill is also survived by he and Karen’s three children: Christine (husband Grant) Kowalski of Delaware, Ohio, Cathy Marrs of Richmond, Michigan, and Michael (Kelsey Turner) Camfield of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Two grandchildren: Juliana Marrs and Ava Marrs.

Siblings: Stephen Camfield of Lima, Ohio, Thomas Camfield of Indianapolis, Indiana, Michelle (husband Charlton) Browning of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bill grew up in Indianapolis. He attended North Central High School and graduated in the class of 1975. After high school he attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Studies. He was in ROTC during his college days. He later graduated with a masters of science degree from Indiana Wesleyan in January of 1988. He graduated from college in 1980 and then was commissioned in May of 1980 to join the Army. Bill was a military man for his career. He was an Army officer who started off as an infantry officer and transitioned to a Military intelligence officer. He retired a Major in 2016. He also worked for Ford Motor Company as a supervisor in material control for five years. He was employed by the US Government in Macomb, Michigan as a G2 Intelligence and Security Foreign Intelligence officer. His career with military and government spanned more than 30 years.

Aside from his career Bill had many other hobbies and interests which included traveling, he greatly enjoyed reading, working in his workshop, as he was a very handy man. He also enjoyed watching movies, camping, riding his motorcycle and visiting with family and friends. Bill was a proud Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in the Catholic Church, he was a church usher, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Bill loved playing with his grandkids.

A couple of his favorite sayings were “Situational Awareness” and “Trust, but verify.”

Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, neighbor who touched many lives. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by many.

A rosary will be recited on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 3:30 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Geist, located at 7855 Cork Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46236. Visitation will follow from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit Parish at Geist, located at 10350 Glaser Way, Fishers, Indiana, 46037.

Father Dale Ehrman will officiate.

Entombment with full Army Military honors will follow at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Indianapolis.
