William Lloyd Browning, age 86, of Westfield, IN, passed away on August 2, 2024. Born on July 11, 1938, William was a proud alum of Dartmouth College (B.S.) and Butler University (M.S.).
William had a distinguished and impactful career, beginning as a teacher at Milwaukee Country Day School and progressing to Park Tudor School in 1965, where he taught for 44 years. In addition to his teaching, William was a dedicated coach, leading teams in wrestling, football, soccer, softball, and track and field, inspiring and mentoring countless students along the way.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, William enjoyed canoeing, hiking, and mountain climbing. He reached the summits of several 14,000-foot mountains, including the first and second highest peaks in the continental United States, as well as Mount Washington in New Hampshire. William was also an avid cyclist and proudly completed the Hilly Hundred multiple times.
William is survived by his beloved wife, Dixie Burkhart Browning, with whom he shared 35 loving years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, William E. Browning (Vickie); daughter, Amy Browning Ling (Steve); stepdaughter, Christine Blair Monroy; and stepdaughter, Amy Blair Hillman (Craig); and his sister, Heidi Browning Heltzel. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Christina Terhune (Doug); Zachary Morris (Kristin); Christian Morris (Ali); Mallory Mortl; and Sophia Monroy, as well as his great-grandchildren, Gavin and Morgan Terhune, and Blake Morris.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; his stepdaughter, Peggy Blair; and his siblings, Carolyn Browning Ramsayer and Jeffrey F. Browning.
Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate William’s life with a memorial gathering to be held from 1-3pm on Monday, August 12th, 2024, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite). A private graveside service and burial, for only the family, will immediately follow at the conclusion of the gathering.
In lieu of flowers and in cherishing Bill's memory, the family requests to all those who knew him to share their favorite memory of Bill with them.
