William “Bill” Thomas, 79, passed away on May 6, 2023.
He was born in Garwood, West Virginia, on February 5, 1944, to William and Lucy Thomas.
Bill was a loving husband, father, papaw, and friend to many. He loved helping everyone in any way he could. Bill had a love for driving, traveling, boating and camping with his grandkids. Bill loved to share the history of his ancestors with his family. Sometime while completing school Bill joined the Army Reserve in 1961 and finished his service in 1967. While in the Army he met a man by the name of Jerry Wright who introduce him to his now wife Mavis Thomas. They finalized their love for one another on March 28, 1964. Since being married they had two children, Terry Allen Thomas and Bridget LaVon Thomas (Bottoroff). While pregnant with Terry they moved to Indiana from Kentucky. After moving to Indiana Bill began his trucking career in 1967. After 42 years of being a semi-truck driver he retired in 2009 at the ripe young age of 65. After retiring he started a lawn mowing business called Grasshoppers Inc. After starting his lawn mowing business, he extended his services into hauling freight for businesses. Outside of his side business he loved taking care of his beautiful wife of 59 wonderful years of marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis LaVern Thomas; Children: Terry Thomas, Joshua (Wendy) Thomas, Bridget ( Christopher) Bottoroff; Grandchildren: Brittney Thomas (James Cross),Summer (Matt) Irwin, Cassie (Nich) Volkman, Briana (Brian) Bush, Terra (Drue) Goss, Dakota (Paige) Thomas, Kaileigh Thomas (Nate Leestma), Stormie Thomas, Trace Thomas 19 Great Grandchildren Siblings: Margaret Brewster, Linda Newton, Brenda Howerton, Carol Sue Asbury, Paul Thomas, and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; William Turner and Lucy Belle Thomas; Siblings: Fern Milam, Gladys Lawerence, Ruby White, Daphne Duncan, Agnes Greene, Harry Thomas, Raymond Thomas, James Thomas.
Funeral service will take place Noon Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229 with burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held Monday, May 15, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same location. An additional visitation will take place Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
