Wayland Lance Archer, 84 of Carmel, IN passed peacefully from this life on February 8, 2014. Born and raised in Clinton, IN, he attended Clinton High School and received his degree from Purdue in 1952. He served in the US Marine Corps as an officer during the Korean War and afterward began a career he loved with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served 25 years as a Special Agent in the Richmond, VA, Detroit, MI and Indianapolis Divisions. During that time he was also a Police School Instructor in Michigan and Indiana and also taught firearms and defensive tactics at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Bloomington, IN and Plainfield, IN. In 1970 he was appointed Special Agent Counselor for the 85th Session of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, VA which was attended by police officers throughout the US and seven foreign countries. He retired from the FBI in 1980 and with his lifelong friend William Mattingly co-founded AMI Associates, a security consulting firm. He conducted investigations for many organizations including the US State Department and the Motion Picture Association of America. He then became Associate Security Representative for the NFL when the Colts moved to Indianapolis and served in that capacity for 20 years. He was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, the FBI National Academy Associates, John Purdue Club and Jerusalem Lodge 99 of the Free & Accepted Masons in Clinton, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Odell and Mary Archer of Terre Haute, IN, his beloved wife Helen Bodnar Archer, and twin brother Waite H. Archer of Lafayette, IN. He is survived by his sons Lance (Dawn) Archer of Carmel, IN, and Brad Archer of Alpharetta, GA, granddaughters Julia and Jessica Archer and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15 at the Mansion at Oak Hill. Friends and family are invited to gather from 3:00 p.m. with a reception following the service.
