Warren S. Johnson
91, of Indianapolis, passed away on May 19, 2015. Warren was born in Indianapolis, IN on January 22, 1924 to the late, Laban Robert C. and Jet (Stone) Johnson. He attended Arsenal Tech High School and graduated from Broad Ripple High School. Warren went on to complete degrees in architecture, education and seminary all from Butler University.
Warren's educational career included teaching at IPS and going on to retire from Lawrence Township Schools, in 1987. He taught 6th grade in both Mary Castle Elementary and Craig Middle School in Lawrence Township.
Warren also served as a minister at several area churches, most recently with Hortonville United Methodist Church.
Warren served his country honorably in the U.S. Army Air Force Flying 15th Airborne during WWII, where he was Top Turrett Gunner. He was a qualified Carbine-marksman and Pistol expert. He fought in Po Valley, North Apennines and Rhineland. Warren received several decorations and citations including the EAMD Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze stars, the American Theater Ribbon, Gold Conduct Ribbon, Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Unit Citation. Following active duty, Warren went on to achieve the level of Captain with the Air Force Reserve. He was a member of the American Legion Post 3.
Warren was a kind, generous, patient and humble man who loved his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always made sure to have gifts for them when he would see them. Warren's hobbies included homebuilding, playing golf and watching the Indianapolis Indians baseball team.
Warren was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, M. Jane Johnson, sister, Ruth Johnson, and brother, Albert Johnson. Left to cherish his memory are his son, David H. Johnson; daughter, Beth D. Myette (husband, Mark); five grandchildren: Dianna Sparks, Shane Johnson, Sarah Gale, Heidi Moffatt and Dakota Myette; and nine great-grandchildren: Tyler, Trey, Brianna, Danielle, Kalman, Xzavier, Zada, Katelyn and Jillian.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2015 in Flanner and Buchanan- Broad Ripple, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.
