Indianapolis

Walter G. "Wally" Justus, 88, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on January 29, 2026.

Wally was born on May 27, 1937, on the eastside of Indianapolis, Indiana, delivered by a midwife, an origin story that fit the character of a man who remained grounded, practical, and deeply connected to his roots throughout his life.

As a teenager, Wally worked as a bricklayer, and it was on a job site on the westside of Indianapolis that he met Pat Fendley. Their relationship quickly grew into a lifelong bond, and the two were soon married. Wally and Pat were married for 12 years, and together they welcomed four beautiful children who would become the center of Wally's life and legacy.

Wally was a graduate of Warren Central High School and later attended Butler University.

He eventually joined his late father, Walter E. Justus, in the family real estate business. As the third-generation owner and President of the Justus Companies, Wally carried forward a legacy that began in 1910. He was instrumental in the construction and development of numerous residential and commercial projects located in Indiana and throughout the Midwest, as well as in Florida.

A gifted builder and developer, Wally helped shape communities through homebuilding, hotels, and large-scale multifamily development. He was deeply involved in various HUD programs, and was responsible for developing thousands of apartments through these initiatives, expanding access to quality housing and opportunity for many families.

Wally's life reflected both discipline and adventure. An Eagle Scout, he embodied the values of service, preparedness, and integrity. He attended Culver Naval Academy where he learned to be an avid sailor, a passion that remained close to his heart. He also served in the United States Navy with the Seabees.

Wally was a man of faith and was Presbyterian. He was known for his generous spirit and his instinct to favor the underdog. He was also fiercely loyal to his closest friends and established lifelong friendships that meant the world to him.

Wally believed deeply in giving back. He was one of the original "Godfathers" during the formation of St. Mary's Child Center, and he generously contributed to its mission throughout the years.

He was also a proud member of Masonic Lodge (Oriental 500), and a prominent member of the Hillcrest Country Club.

Wally never met a stranger. He was a natural conversationalist with a quick wit, a warm smile, and a gift for making people feel at ease. Always impeccably dressed, he was known for his dapper style, confident presence, and love of a good story, traits that made him as memorable socially as he was professionally. While Wally built buildings and

communities, he was most proud of the relationships he built, especially with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and lifelong friends.

Wally is survived by his beloved family, including his three children Tamara Jo Justus, Simone Ann Spiegel (Sam), and Walter E. Justus (Jane), five grandchildren Justin Root (Paige), Derrek Root (Ashley), Samantha Spiegel, Sabrina Smith (Jonathan), and Jillian Foran (Dylan), and ten great-grandchildren Vincent, Gwen, Lillian, Miles, Daniel, Carson, Alex, Ethan, Margot, and Rowan. He is also survived by his half-sister, Jackie Insana, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and his loving companion Loren Urbancic.

Importantly, Brenda Gallo was his assistant for over 40 years and represented him admirably.

Wally was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Walter G. Justus ("Guy"), and his dear daughter, Babette Justus.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers and staff at The Barrington of Carmel for the care and kindness shown to Wally.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his faith, generosity, charisma, and the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Child Center in honor of Wally's lifelong generosity and commitment to its mission.

Visitation will be Sunday February 1st, at Flanner Buchanan Washington Park East from 2-6pm. His funeral service will be Monday, February 2nd at 10:30am. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery, in Mount Vernon Mausoleum next to his parents.
