Walter Davis

Walter William Davis 93, of Carmel, IN, passed away on August 7, 2014. He was born on November 27, 1920 in Huntington, IN to the late Bryan and Cleo (Guthier) Davis. He grew up in Indianapolis and attended St. Joan of Arc grade school. In 1935 after his freshman year at Cathedral High School, his family moved to Anderson, IN, and Walter graduated from Anderson High School in 1938. While there, he was very active in sports, winning nine varsity letters. He was a starting player on the Anderson State Basketball Championship team in 1937. After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, Walter graduated from Butler University in 1948. While at Butler he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. In July 1946 he became an agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, retiring after 62 years. As a part of his sales and service, he qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table for several years. He was a past president of the Society of Financial Services Professionals (formerly CLU). He was past president of the Downtown Sertoma and was active in fund raising for the Red Cross and service for Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the St. Pius Council of the Knights of Columbus and Christ the King church. Walter is survived by his son, Thomas B. Davis; daughters Janet C. Espiritu and Christine (Robert) Welcher; son-in law Charles Lawrance; grandchildren Jennifer (Christopher) Frederick, Scott (Megan) Lawrance, Kenneth (Kristy) Lawrance; great-grandchildren, Paige Espiritu-Frederick, Ethan Lawrance, Allison Lawrance, Joshua Lawrance, Jacob Lawrance, and Gabriel Frederick. He was preceded in death by his wife of many wonderful years dating from November 28, 1946, Patricia Ann (Plummer) Davis in 2014, son Mark W. Davis in 1967, daughter Margaret L. (Charles) Lawrance in 2011, and brother Bernard "Pete" Davis in 1993. Memorial services will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1827 Kessler Blvd E. Drive, Indianapolis, IN on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Flanner and Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens handling arrangements.
