Vernon Christopher Mcgee, Sr.

August 4, 1947 — February 12, 2016

Vernon Christopher McGee, son of Walter and Nancy Cotton-King McGee was born August 4, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Vernon was one of ten children; as a child he was very mischievous and loved playing pranks on his siblings. Vernon took pride in being available whenever his six sisters needed him. He attended the Indianapolis Public Schools and Arsenal Technical High School.

Vernon met the love of his life, Deborah Lynn Allen, and after dating for a number of years, they married, April 27, 1979. Together they had a zest for life and a love for each other that was evident to all who knew them. They were almost inseparable in devotion to each other and family.

Vernon was gifted with a melodious voice and loved to sing. In his former years he sang professionally at local clubs in the Indianapolis area. Although singing was one of his passions, he loved playing cards with friends, fishing, camping and spending quality time with his family. Vernon was a professional painter and along with his sons owned his own painting company, “Wet Paint.” For a number of years, he worked in the Gulf of Mexico, painting “oil rigs”. In later years, he enjoyed reading and studying the Holy Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Nancy McGee, siblings, Walter McGee, Jr., Jan Carl King, Lillian West, and Martha Kelly. Those left to cherish his memory are, Deborah, his loving and devoted wife of 37 years, daughter Kiesha McGee, sons; Gary Delaney Offutt, Jr., Vernon Christopher McGee, Jr., and Dev-vern LaMont McGee, brother; Roosevelt King (Rose), sisters; Mattie Reid, Mary H. Taylor, Eliza J. McGee, and Nancy L. Dodd (Allen), grandchildren; Gary D. Offutt III, Lauran G. Offutt, Dai-yja M. McCurty, Damen F. McCurty, and Dev-vern L. McGee, Jr., in-laws; Jerry M., Gene, and Dennis R. Allen, Robert & Sharon Taylor, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

We are here not to sadly bemoan the passing away of Vernon, but to acknowledge a life that embodied love and compassion and a life well spent. We know beyond a doubt that Vernon Christopher McGee, Sr. is now in Jehovah’s memory waiting on the call. (Job 14:15) This we know because the Bible tells us so.
