Verdie E. Higgins

August 16, 1931 — August 12, 2025

Indianapolis

Verdie E. Higgins, 93, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 after a brief illness in Cornelius, North Carolina. Born on August 16, 1931, in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee to the late Carson R. and Loler Carver, “Nana” was a woman of unwavering faith who loved deeply and unconditionally.

Verdie retired from American Art Clay after 35 years of hard work working the assembly lines on her feet. Despite the long days, Verdie managed to make many lifelong friends and created wonderful memories with them. She was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Indianapolis, Indiana.

In addition to her parents, Verdie is preceded in death by her husband Howard J. Higgins, daughters Donna M. Combs and Phyliss Mutschler, grandson Greg Mutschler, and all of her eight siblings; brothers Ottis Carver (Helen), Aaron Carver (Leslie Mae), Benton Carver (Dexter), and Steve Carver (Hilda), sisters AV (Carver) Wilmore (Roy), Louise (Carver) Gregory (JD),Dorothy (Carver) Adamson, Hazel (Carver) Goad, and brother-in-law Wilbur (Florence) Higgins. She is survived by her daughters Kim (Tom) Burkart, Glenda (Rod) Snyder and Debbie (Rob) Hallagan, grandchildren Joshua, Jason, Megan, Molly, Jennifer, Kevin, Christopher, Emily, Maya and Lilli, ten great grandchildren and many beloved nieces (including great), and nephews (including great), brothers-in-law Cordell Adamson, and Lelon Goad.

Verdie leaned hard on her foundation of faith and relationship with Jesus Christ to give her the grace, compassion and comfort to get through the many losses and difficult times of her life. She was a true example of a godly woman of quiet strength and resilience which she demonstrated until her very last breath. Those that were fortunate enough to know her would describe her as “the best human” showing a unique sweet spirit of determination and humbleness.

Her life was a testimony of her faith and is best described by this poem as seen through the eyes of her beloved daughters, Donna and Kim:

I am the daughter of a woman who, even when broken, kept walking.

And every time I doubt my strength, I remember I come from her fire.

That’s where my resilience, my courage, and my magic were born.

~Sabine Jacobs.

Verdie’s passing leaves behind a void that can never be filled. However, her legacy of faith, dedication to her family and friends, courage, resilience and quiet strength will continue to inspire and carry those that were lucky enough to know and adore her.
