Valerie Murray

December 14, 1951 — August 4, 2025

Indianapolis, Indiana

Valerie Murray was born on December 14, 1951, to Curtis Oliver and Ellaree Monger. Valerie was a woman of deep love, quiet resilience, and unwavering faith. She built a life grounded in family, service, purpose and leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.

A lifelong learner, Valerie earned her GED and went on to take courses at Indiana Business College, along with many other courses—especially Bible seminars, which deepened her knowledge of the Word and strengthened her spiritual walk. She pursued a career at Chrysler, where she served as a recording secretary for UAW Local 550.

Valerie dedicated her life to ministry. She served faithfully as an Evangelist, Chaplain, Clergy member, and Minister in the prison ministry, where she brought encouragement, faith, and compassion to both women and men. Her service reflected the heart of who she was—selfless, kind, and deeply committed to lifting others up. Valerie was the life of the party—her infectious sense of humor and smile lit up every room she entered. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome, always ready to share a joke that kept people smiling long after. She loved having a good time and made sure everyone around her did too.

She was preceded in death by her mother Ellaree Monger, brother Roscoe Campbell III, late husband Richard Murray and her nephew Rocky Campbell IV. She is survived by her husband John L. Grays and was a devoted mother to her two daughters Jennifer Jones and Shelley Pimpton (Torey). She was a proud grandmother to David Dawson (Sherell), Ashley Hoyle (Tony), and Tiarra Edwards. Her love continued to grow with each generation, blessing her with her great-grandchildren Malaya McClure, Destiny McClure, A’Mya Dawson, Karter Collier, and Harley Brown. Valerie also had many adopted children, all of whom she loved deeply and treated as her own, offering them the same care, wisdom, and unconditional love she gave to her family.

She was the heart of her family, always ready with a warm hug, a word of encouragement, or a quiet strength that reminded everyone they could get through anything. Her presence will be missed beyond measure, but her love, faith, and the example she set will live on through the lives she touched. Valerie’s legacy is not only found in the memories held, but in the compassion, resilience, and kindness she instilled in all who knew her.
