V. “Sue” Powell, 86, of Fairland, Indiana, passed away on May 12, 2026. She was born on September 29, 1939, in Toledo, Ohio, to her parents, Laurel and Esther Persing.
Sue lived a life filled with devotion and deep love for her family. A talented and avid knitter and crocheter, she poured care into every blanket, scarf, and handmade gift. She also lovingly sewed clothes for her children when they were young. She enjoyed board games and card games, and in her earlier years was known for making delicious homemade candy.
She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother and was especially proud to be a great‑grandmother. Her family was the heart of her world.
Sue retired from the State of Indiana Auditor’s Office after many years of dedicated service. She and her husband, Dick, shared a love of travel—taking cruises with their siblings, exploring new places, and spending time together in their RV at Cataract Falls. Their getaways to the campground created some of their happiest memories.
She is survived by her children, Debbie (Mark) McKee and Steve (Missy) Powell; grandchildren, Erika (Justin) Geis, Justin Powell (fiancée Kristin Hammond), Zackary Powell (fiancée Payton Stanley), Jessika McKee (fiancé Dwayne Caldwell), and Luke Powell (fiancée AnnMarie McQueary); and great‑grandchildren, Asher Geis and Hallie Geis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Tom Persing and Mary Phillips; and her loving husband of 52 years, Richard “Dick” N. Powell.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Flanner Buchanan – Memorial Park, 9350 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229.
A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m.
Virginia will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery, beside her beloved husband.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
