THURMAN "WAYNE" MAYES Thurman "Wayne" Mayes of Indianapolis passed away on Wed, Oct 15, 2014 at age 72. Wayne was born on Nov 15, 1941 in Evansville, IN to the late Doris (Arhelger) and Thurman Mayes. In addition to his wife, Vicki J. (Schmidt) Mayes, he is survived by his sons, Erik and Kyle, his daughter, Lorayna Sanders (son-in-law Todd Sanders) and 5 grandchildren: Jake, Jason, Tori, Livi, and Zach. He is also survived by sisters Darice McIntosh, Evansville and Darlene Koch, Waukesha, WI and brother Gary, Evansville. He was a graduate of Evansville Reitz High School. Wayne received his BS degree in mechanical engineering from Evansville College in 1965 and went to work immediately at the Crane Naval Weapons Support Center. He retired from Crane in 1997. He was active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, youth theater, youth football and baseball. After he retired Wayne taught "hands on science" at children's museums and many elementary schools. He also loved sharing the magic of Santa Claus with children of all ages. Wayne will be remembered for his devotion to his family, banjo picking, inventive problem solving, unique engineering adaptations and his love of baseball and football. Wayne and Vicki were married on Dec 19, 1965 and raised their children in Bloomington, IN. Wayne and Vicki also lived in Indianapolis and Lafayette, IN and Urbana, IL. Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan. A celebration of Wayne's life will be held on Mon, Nov 24, at the Cascades Golf Course Banquet Room, 3550 N. Kinser Pike, Bloomington, IN. Informal visitation with the family will be from 3-6 PM with remembrances at 4 PM.
