Thomas David Huckleberry

Thomas D. Huckleberry, 83, Of Greenfield, Indiana, died at home on September 21 , 2026. He was born in Indianapolis on February 1, 1943 to the late Alvis and Irene Huckleberry. Tom attended Christ the King grade school and Cathedral High School and graduated from Saint Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana. Upon graduating, he served in the United States Army. He retired from Crucible Specialty Metals in 2008.

He volunteered for many years at St. Vincent de Paul, repairing dryers for distribution, and received their Service Award in 2013.

Tom loved trains and created an outdoor garden train layout in his backyard complete with handcrafted period buildings and structures. He also enjoyed woodworking and made American Girl doll furniture for his granddaughters, Greta and Ella and created a Thomas the Train table for grandson, Gavin. He also designed furniture for his home, toys for his children, and created bowls, candlesticks and Other decorative items.

Bicycling, camping, hiking, gardening, reading science fiction, and visiting museums were other activities enjoyed by Tom.

Tom was a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather and he was so very proud of his family. His children would Often say: "Dad didn't have a scorecard. He might not always figure out what you needed from him, but if you asked, he would do anything for you.. And he would never bring it up again or expect anything in return."

He was a faithful Catholic. Tom was never judgmental or critical and seldom talked negatively about others. If he was upset or frustrated, the most he would ever say was: "For Pete's sake!"

He is survived by his wife, Roseanne (Mader) Huckleberry, children, Emily Griffin, Sarah, and Edward (Misty) Huckleberry, and grandchildren Gavin, Greta and Gabriella Griffin, brother-in-law Jerry Mader, sisters-in-law Kitty Odle and Eileen Mader and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Janice Berendzen, brothers-in-law John Hall, Ira Odle and Gene Mader, sisters-in-law Jeanette Hall and Sister Marianne Mader, and his son-in-law, Matthew Griffin.

Visitation will take place on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 10:00-12:00pm at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church, 8155 Oaklandon Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46236. A funeral mass will follow at 12:00pm, with a private entombment at Calvary Cemetery.
