Thomas Michael Crawford, 95, of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on January 19, 2024. He was born on August 13, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents, Robert C. Crawford and Sara (Fierbaugh) Crawford.

An accomplished scholar, Tom pursued higher education at Ohio Northern University before graduating with bachelor’s and master's degrees and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. During that time, he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He was proud to be a “True Buckeye.” Tom was also a proud veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 until his honorable discharge from active duty in 1952, and he continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserves through 1957.

Tom embarked on his professional journey at Kraft Foods in the area of product development. It was during this time that he honed his skills and developed a deep passion for research and development. He joined Stokely Van Camp in 1975, eventually retiring as the Vice President of Research and Development. Tom’s professional career was not yet complete, however. After retiring from Stokely Van Camp he formed with Sam Dajani O. A. Laboratories and Research, Inc., which performed environmental and food analysis. Tom was the president of O. A. until he retired (again) in 1993.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Tom was known for embodying true gentlemanly qualities. Throughout his life, he approached every situation with grace and dignity. His positive outlook on life was infectious, bringing comfort to those around him during both joyous and difficult times. “Today is the best day of the rest of your life!!”

Tom's love for learning extended beyond the confines of academia; he had diverse interests that brought him joy throughout his life.  He was an avid reader. Playing golf and bridge were two activities that he cherished and shared with friends. Additionally, Tom possessed an early fascination with cameras and photography, which fueled his curiosity for the science and mechanics behind them. He also served as an usher for many years at the Carmel United Methodist Church.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Nancy Crawford; children, Peter (Cindy) Crawford, Andy (Cheryl) Crawford and David (Daria) Crawford; 7 grandchildren, Sam T. (Liz) Crawford, Ben Crawford, Sara (Nate) Brown, Whitney (Ben) Deane, Mackenzie (Mark) Kulik, Sam A. (Morgan) Crawford and Ellie Crawford; and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, E. Robert “Bob” Crawford and “The Great Uncle Dave”, David C. Crawford.

A Celebration of Life is planned for March 2, 2024, at the Carmel United Methodist Church chapel, 621 S. Rangeline Road, Carmel, IN, with calling hours from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and the celebration of life beginning at 3:00 pm.
