Thomas Arthur McAvoy, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
He was born on July 10, 1924 in Terre Haute, IN to the late Thomas and Naomi (Fleming) McAvoy. Art was a 1942 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and upon graduation, enlisted in the 517 Parachute Regimental Combat Team (PRCT) where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Art married Anna Leach on Christmas Day, 1945; they recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. Art worked for 25 years for the Penn Central Railroad, retiring in 1973. He enjoyed fishing, horse racing, trips to Las Vegas and woodworking.
Art is survived by his wife, Anna McAvoy; children, Tom (Sarah) McAvoy of Waynesville, NC, Marty McAvoy of Elettsville, IN, Barbara Satkamp, Nancy Peacock and Carol (Ken) Hutchinson all of Indianapolis, IN. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren 2 great-great grandchildren. Art was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert McAvoy; sisters, Marjorie Kinzel from Chicago, IL and Dorothy Long from Anderson, IN; sons-in-law, Dick Satkamp, Bobby Peacock; and grandson, Scott Satkamp.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:30pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service, also at the funeral home. Entombment with Military honors will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given the Disabled American Veterans.
