Thomas W. Akers

Indianapolis, Indiana – Thomas William Akers, Sr., passed away on March 18, 2024, at his home after being comforted by family and friends. Tom was born in Newcastle, Indiana, on May 10, 1944, to Harry and Doris (Sterling) Akers. He was 79 years old. 

After graduating from Bloomington High School, Tom joined the United States Army where he served for several years. After which, he became a sheet metal worker, and a member of Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 20, until he retired from the union. Tom then became a bus driver, where he spent the last 20 years driving for MSD Warren Township. 

Tom loved to stay busy. When he was not working, he could be found at home, tending to his garden, mowing the yard, or giving a helping hand to his neighbors on Fisher Road. When he gave himself the chance to relax, it would be on the golf course. 

More than anything though, Tom was about family. Not only his own but anyone who came through his door, his neighbors, and the children who rode his bus. While he could be a little cantankerous, Tom cared deeply for all the people with whom he chose to share his life. 

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, siblings John Akers, Bob Akers, and Sharon Vollman; children Thomas W. Akers II (Beth), Kyle Akers, and Shelly Haag (Jason); grandchildren Ashton Akers, Thomas W. Akers III “Tré” (Jenna), Kenley Akers, Ashley Marks (Larry), Justin Brisentine, Brooke Akers, Mckenna Brisentine, and Emily Haag. 

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 4 pm - 8 pm at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 1 pm. Tom will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery following the services.  

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
