W Therese J. Whalen 84, Carmel died Saturday. Therese was born in Chicago on March 16, 1928 to Thomas and Anna Rice Hanley. She married James M. Whalen in 1954 who preceded her in death. They shared 34 years together. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Kathleen in 1958, her parents, sister Margaret (Peg) and brothers Jim and John. Survivors are son Jim (Carole), daughters Mary Earle (Tom) and Maureen Harpring (Vernon).
Therese graduated from Mercy High School, Chicago in 1945 and worked for Illinois Bell Telephone for ten years, retiring in 1955 to begin raising her children. She was an avid competitive race walker for many years, competing in the Mini-Marathon until age 70 and frequently placing in the top 3 of her age group. Therese loved all sports, especially her Indianapolis Colts and Peyton Manning.
Therese was a founding member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church. She truly loved the time with her family, friends and church.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Carmel Health and Living for their friendship and kindness during the two years she lived there and for the caring and compassion of the staff of St. Vincent Hospital.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. Calling will be Tuesday, January 15, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel.
