Teresa “Terry” Gail Craig Barrett, 72, passed away on May 15, 2026.
She was born May 10, 1954, to Harvey and Frances Craig and grew up on the Eastside of Indianapolis. Terry loved Girl Scouts, earning her First-Class ranking (equal to an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts), camping and as she got older, babysitting.
She graduated from Arlington High School in 1972 and attended Ball State University.
Terry always had a passion for children. She loved caring for them, teaching them and pointing them toward God. She owned her home daycare and preschool business from 1978 to 1998 before pursuing a career at Ben Davis Christian Church as a children’s minister.
She ministered children at Ben Davis Christian Church and East 91st Street Christian Church before retiring in October 2021, spending decades teaching children to love God and to treat others the way they would like to be treated. Terry led with her own life as an example; always volunteering to help others, managing the family’s major events from graduation parties to weddings and developing long-lasting friendships with everyone who knew her.
She married James “Jim” Barrett on Sept. 8, 1979, and created a blended family with three children: Sherry Barrett Strehlow, Shelley Barrett and Jeffery “Jeff” Barrett.
In addition to Jim and their three children, Terry is survived by three sisters: Julia Craig, Lisa Gibson (Samuel) and Linda Moore, grandchildren; Jaimee Anderson, Chloee Strehlow, Kylee Strehlow, Ricky Strehlow and great-grandchildren; Arianna Anderson and Aleya Lewis along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Frances, and one grandchild, Britnee Anderson.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on May 23, 2026, with service following at 4 p.m. at Ben Davis Christian Church, 701 S. High School Rd., Indianapolis. Indiana 46241. Memorial gifts may be directed to the Ben Davis Christian Church.
Flanner Buchanan Decatur Township is entrusted to assist the family with these funeral arrangements.
Burial will be private at West Newton Cemetery in West Newton, Indiana.
