Tennessee Elisabeth Read Sendak, Huntsville, Alabama, late of Indianapolis and Crown Point, Indiana, passed from this Earth on Friday, March 4, 2011. She was 96.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore L. Sendak; parents, Thomas Peek Read and Laura Lucille Read of Paradise, Texas; brother Thomas Peek Read, Jr., and sister Doris A. Bogart.
Affectionately known to friends and family as “Tee”, she lived in Tiptonville, Tennessee, until her family moved to Paradise, Texas, where she graduated from high school. She attended Texas Women’s College in Ft. Worth, and later graduated with a degree in education from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton. During college, she sang as a female vocalist for several “swing bands” in the northern Texas area. She taught high school home economics in Waco, Texas, and during the Second World War met her husband while employed as an home demonstration agent for the Taylor County Extension Service, Abilene. Married in 1942, after the War she and husband Ted briefly made their home in Indianapolis, and later in Crown Point, Indiana, where she taught home economics at Crown Point High School and raised their three children. In 1969 the family moved to Indianapolis when Ted was elected Attorney General of Indiana. Her husband having preceded her in death in 1999, she relocated to the Huntsville, Alabama, area in 2007.
Tee was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Meridian Street United Methodist Church (Indianapolis), SCORE Club of Indianapolis, and Salvation Army Auxillary.
She is survived by her three children, Theodore T. (Christine) Sendak of Madison, Alabama, Timothy R. (Peggy) Sendak of Crown Point, Indiana, and Cynthia L. (Bruce) Clark of Madison, Alabama; brother Woodard Tipton (Mildred) Read of Bedford, Texas; sister-in-law Mildred Read of Decatur, Texas; brothers-in-law Bert M. (Beatrice) Sendak of Munster, Indiana, and Ronald M. Sendak of Virginia Beach, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Theodore T. Sendak, Jr., Robert R. Sendak, Matthew V. (Hilary) Sendak, Carrie M. Sendak, Christopher L. (Amber) Robison, Catherine E. Sendak, James Read Robison; two great grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Friends may call upon and visit the family at Crown Hill Cemetery Gothic Chapel, 700 West 38th Street, Indianapolis, on Friday, March 11, 2011, between 10 a.m. and noon. Funeral there at 12:30 p.m., followed by graveside service.
