Indianapolis, Indiana – Sylvia Kay Metzger, 83, went home to the Lord on June 21, 2025. Her adventurous spirit and enduring love will be forever missed.
Sylvia was born on May 1, 1942, to parents Henry Clay Bowsher & Ann Bell (Comstock) Riley in Indianapolis. Sylvia graduated from Arsenal Tech High School. She loved raising her kids, laughing with extended family, and helping others. Sylvia was also a long-term volunteer at the Murat, even heading one of the lady’s clubs as president.
Sylvia was always up for a challenge. She grew up an avid softball player, later becoming a coach and cheerleader for her children and her grandchildren. Her favorite sports teams were the Indianapolis Colts & the Indiana Pacers, watching their games every chance she could.
Sylvia loved to draw and enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband Michael around the country. Whether that was Panama City or Gulf Shores, they both loved to visit new and exciting places. But there was no place like home, where she loved spending time with her grandkids and her schnauzers.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Michael Metzger; children Karen Ayler Gawrys (Kevin), Kirk James Ayler (Kristin); stepchildren Terri Back, Patricia Garmon (Dan), Cristina Carper (Jeremy); siblings Shirley McDonald, Sonja Bowsher Nye, and Donald Bowsher; grandchildren Samantha Gawrys, Megan Gawrys, Katie Gawrys, Ellie Gawrys, Jake Ayler, Paige Ayler, Corey Summers, Caleb Murnane, Caitlin McSwain; and her great-grandchildren. Her brother Robert Bowsher preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025, from 11 – 2 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) with funeral services taking place at 2 pm. Burial will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery immediately following the service.
