Sylvia Nell Yott Gavit of Carmel, Indiana passed away at her home on June 21, 2026 at the age of 92. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 24, 1934 to Charles Bernard Yott and Nell Denny Yott.

Sylvia was graduated from Broad Ripple High School and Depauw University where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. Sylvia was a lifelong homemaker who devoted herself to raising her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to homemaking she had many hobbies and is remembered for her beautiful needlework and other crafts. She was a lifelong needle pointer, knitter and miniaturist, whose miniature houses were displayed in the Carmel Miniature Museum. She won many awards for her needlework at the Indiana State Fair. Among her last gifts were hundreds of baby blankets she knit for her great-grandchildren and family friends.

Additionally, Sylvia was an avid volunteer who was active in her community. She belonged to the Junior League of Indianapolis where she served on the Executive Board and made lifelong friends. She was a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Women’s Committee, the Carmel Planning Commission, the Indianapolis Propylaeum and various school PTOs.

Sylvia married George Bernard Gavit on September 7, 1957. She is survived by her children Elizabeth Gavit Filipow (Keith Filipow), Martha McQueen Gavit, and Charles Gregory Gavit (Lisa Gavit), ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Judith Yott and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother Charles Yott.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sylvia's honor may be made to Junior League - Indianapolis or to the Carmel Clay Public Library.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Indianapolis Propylaeum on August 30, 2026, from 1pm to 3pm.
