Born on January 16, 1943, in Indianapolis, Sue was the daughter of Alice E. Ireland and Wilbur Maurice Ireland Jr. She grew up in the Indianapolis area and graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1961. After high school, she attended Ball State University and earned a certificate in dental hygiene from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1964. At age 12, she began working in a dental office, marking the start of a lifelong dedication to her profession. She practiced as a dental hygienist for nearly 40 years and retired from Ball Dentistry in 2001.
Sue met her husband, John L. Miller, on New Year’s Eve in 1965. They were married on May 1, 1966, at University Park Christian Church.
Her faith guided her throughout her life, and she generously shared her time and talents with others. Sue especially enjoyed volunteering and participating in the many ministries of Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for over 40 years. She was also deeply involved with the Indianapolis Great Banquet, Kairos Prison Ministry International, and the Crossroads Guild. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John L. Miller, and her sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Phillips.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Mark R. Miller (Kathy) and Matthew W. Miller (Meredith); her nine grandchildren: Ann Acklen, Jack (Mary Alice), Will, Emma, Lacy, Dylan, Logan, Luke, and Liam; her two great-grandchildren, Maria and Ruth; and her ten nieces and one nephew.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Wellbrooke of Westfield and Paradigm Hospice for the kindness and compassionate care they provided during Sue’s final days.
