Sumie Grames, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away on July 10, 2012. Known as "Susie" to friends and family, she was born near Tokyo, Japan on December 21, 1921. Susie was a role model for the perfect lady. At the same time, she possessed a fiercely independent spirit and an indomitable strength of will. She decided as a child that she wanted to see the world. She married someone her family considered an enemy: an American soldier. She moved to a post- WWII country that also considered her an enemy because she was Japanese. Yet Susie was too free spirited to care, and soon charmed all that met her into being her friends. Although she always loved the land of her birth, she also embraced her new country and became a naturalized citizen. Susie pushed through various challenges, always determined to live life on her own terms. She was widowed young, and raised her two sons as a single mother, working full-time at RCA. When her sons grew up, Susie once again pursued her love of travel. Susie will be remembered fondly for her free and independent spirit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Grames, Sr.; son, Mike Grames; grandson, Nicholas Grames. She is survived by her son, Chop (Katie) Grames; granddaughter, Elizabeth Grames. Please join her family on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 10am at Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestown, for a graveside service celebrating her life.
