Sue Starkey Felty died at the age of 84 on January 10th, 2018. She was born in Carroll County, Indiana on July 10, 1933, the daughter of Nathaniel J. Starkey and Hazel Rasler Starkey. She had one brother, Joe A. Starkey who preceded her in death. She married Glenn A. Brown in 1951 and had four sons, Rick Lynn Brown (Connie), Douglas Lee Brown (Rita), Gregory Glenn Brown (Regina) and Ronald Joe Brown (Tammy). She later divorced and in 1973 married Ronald J. Felty and became stepmother to Michelle A. Felty Aubrecht and Joel B. Felty. She has 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.
She did a variety of interesting things in her lifetime starting when she was still in high school by becoming the storyteller at the Logansport radio station. That was followed by numerous other broadcasting experiences. After her husband’s death in 1988, she worked in senior retirement housing in Racine, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois in management positions. Later she worked as an office manager for the law firm, Boodell & Domanskis, LLC in Chicago.
She had an inquisitive mind. As a preteen, she took classes at the Wilson School of Drama in Logansport, Indiana and later taught students in interruptive drama. Since college was not an option for her as she graduated from high school, she found other avenues of learning, by going to lectures, workshops and later she took classes at Indiana University, College of DuPaige in Illinois, Evansville University in Indiana, and the University of Wisconsin Parkside but had not received her Bachelor’s degree which she always regretted. In 2010, she received her Certificate in the Liberal Arts of the The Basic Program of Liberal Education for Adults, a four-year program offered by the University of Chicago. Learning new things was always fun for her!
“The Joy is in the Journey” was a saying she liked to repeat.
She was a member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago where she was both a Deacon and an Elder.
