Sue K. Westbrook

Sue K. Westbrook, 84, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, she was born on October 31, 1930 to William C. and Irene (Henricksen) Kassebaum. Sue was a graduate of Shortridge High School, Purdue University, and The New York University School of Retailing. Sue began her career in the Advertising Department of L.S. Ayres & Co., advancing to serve as Advertising Manager. After Ayres, she was Advertising Manager of Block's in Indianapolis before serving as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales Promotion for 13 years at the Elder-Beerman stores based in Dayton, Ohio. She was on the Board of Directors of the Retail Advertising Conference, Chicago, and the NRMA Sales Promotion Group, and a past Chairman of the Frederick Atkins Sales Promotion Group. A Charter Member of John Knox Presbyterian Church, she served as a Deacon and Elder, and was a member of the Presbyterian Women's Group. Sue was a Past President of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Women's Committee West Group and received the 2006 Mayor's Award for Community Service. Sue was very involved in her children's activities as they were growing up. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 7 years and also helped to start the Northwest Co-op Preschool. Sue is survived by her daughters, Martha L. Westbrook and Dr. Anne L. Westbrook; daughter-in-law, Vicki A. Westbrook; grandchildren, Jordin N. and Jackson W. Westbrook. She is also survived by her best friend and sister-in-law, Eleanor Kassebaum; and sister-in-law, Marilyn George. Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Howard W. Westbrook; son, William "Bill" Westbrook; brother, William J. Kassebaum. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 from 4-8pm at Flanner and Buchanan – Speedway. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30am in John Knox Presbyterian Church, with entombment immediately following in Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to John Knox Presbyterian Church or the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Friends are invited to leave online condolences for the family at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
