“If you don’t have time to do it right, you certainly don’t have time to do it over.” Steve Foxx certainly lived those words taught to him by his father and attested to by anyone who did a project with him. Steve’s work and hobbies (cooking and decorating) were one in the same, just as friends were clients and clients became friends. All enjoyed his hospitality and attention to detail.
On Friday, July 15, 2022, Steven Wayne Foxx died while on respite care. His Life’s Journey Hospice Team was wonderful and helped him through 4 difficult years. Steve was born on October 12, 1948 in Greencastle, IN to the late Donald and Freda Foxx and grew up in a large extended family. He was very involved with Boy Scouts, eventually earning his Eagle Scout.
After graduation from Greencastle High School in 1966, Steve attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Following graduation, Steve returned to Indiana and met Sue, the girl next door, and they were married in 1974. They shared 48 years of living and working in Indianapolis. Steve managed several restaurants, sold restaurant equipment for Edward Don and did interior design for Decorating Den and Kirk Furniture.
While Steve wasn’t much of a ‘baby’ person, his daughter, Libby, won his heart. When she was born in 1984 he carried around her hospital cap in his pocket for weeks. He was ill by the time his grandchildren, Blaise and Franny, arrived, but always tried to join in celebrations. He and Franny had a cute relationship as she always tattled when grandpa forgot to use his walker.
Steve was a longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. He was in the first group making the Christ Renews His Parish Retreat and for 10 years he was part of the IHM team that cooked meals at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen. A fixture at the 5:30 pm Saturday Mass, Steve could always be found in the second pew on the left so he could hear the sermon and hopefully avoid Cheerio-eating babies.
To Steve, hospitality was essential. He loved to entertain and pull out all the silver. Guests were treated to frozen drinks and sumptuous trays decorated with his fanciful fruit frogs and swans. Family, friends, neighbors and hospice nurses were treated to his special ‘anything but beef’ seasoning which he refilled upon request. For many years he struggled with his weight, but found strength and companionship in his bariatric group as he learned new ways to cook and entertain.
Steve packages were legendary. Not so much for what was inside, but for the gift wrapping and bow. Each was unique and creative. For Christmas one year, he turned the tricycle for grandson, Blaise, into Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sue (Lothman) Foxx; daughter, Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Mora; son-in-law, Stuart Mora; grandchildren, Blaise and Franny Mora; sister, Brenda Lothman; and a long list of extended family and friends.
Friends and family will gather at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 5692 Central Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46220 to celebrate Steve’s life with a memorial mass on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 11am. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church, beginning at 9am. Steve’s ashes will be scattered in a private family ceremony.
