Steven John Semling, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Whitestown, IN, on Saturday, November 22, 2025. He was born on September 17, 1945, in Merrill, WI, to Donald and June (Germain) Semling.
Steve proudly served his country for three years in the U.S. Army Corps, earning the National Defense Service Medal as a rifle sharpshooter. He deeply valued the friendships he made during his service and kept in touch with his Army buddies throughout his life.
A man of warmth, humor, and unmistakable presence, Steve was lovingly known as Mr. Costco for his daily grocery adventures and the friendships he formed along the way. Grocery shopping was more than an errand – it was his passion. He often visited several stores in one day, always in search of the best ingredients to cook for family and friends. Whether he was preparing his famous chicken soup or mastering the grill with his signature grilled pork roast, Steve expressed love through food, never letting anyone leave without a container of leftovers.
He also enjoyed dining out, thoroughly reviewing menus beforehand and selecting the perfect meal before even stepping out the door. Growing up in Wisconsin, he remained a devoted Green Bay Packers fan and attended games whenever he could. His sense of humor, especially his silly dad jokes, brought joy to many – often delivered through a phone call intended solely to make someone smile.
Steve was known for his kindness, generosity, and compassionate spirit. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 55 years, Sharon (Marth) Semling, and a loving father to his children, Jodi McConnell and Justin Semling. His greatest joy was his granddaughter, Carly June McConnell, with whom he shared a special bond.
He is survived by his wife Sharon; his children Justin of Whitestown, IN, and Jodi (John) McConnell of Indianapolis, IN; and his granddaughter Carly June McConnell. He is also survived by his siblings Donna Hertel of Merrill, WI; Andrew (Renee) Semling of Merrill, WI; Dave (Peggy) Semling of Burnsville, MN; Sara Semling (Tom Horsley) of Sister Bay, WI; Connie Semling of Wausau, WI; and Sister-in-Law, Sarah (Wold) Semling, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and June Semling, and his brothers, Dan and Matt Semling.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Paradigm Hospice and all the doctors, nurses, and staff for their exceptional kindness and care throughout Steve’s difficult journey.
A private service for immediate family will be held, with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date. In remembrance of Steve, contributions to either the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.
