Steven Parks Schafer, affectionately known as Steve, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 11, 2026, at the age of 82, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife, Shirley Ann Schafer. Born on October 7, 1943, in Indianapolis, IN, Steve led a life rich in service, friendship, and cherished memories.
Steve's career spanned an impressive 40 years at Chrysler Automotive, where he served proudly as a representative for the United Auto Workers (UAW). His compassion for others and skill in building rapport with coworkers earned him many lifelong friendships that were a testament to his character. His presence and wisdom were felt in every interaction, marking his career as both impactful and meaningful.
Before beginning his career, Steve attended Mooresville High School, where he made history as the first male cheerleader—a role he took great pride in. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a Military Policeman (MP), where he partook in memorable moments, including a humorous incident where he chased his lunch around while guarding airplanes.
Outside of work, Steve was an active participant in the lives of his children, particularly during their early years. He dedicated time to supporting them through Boy Scouts, coaching little league teams in baseball, softball, and football, all while teaching them the values of teamwork and camaraderie. A passionate music lover, he created lasting memories with his children by taking them to concerts, including a special trip to see Elvis Presley’s last concert in Indianapolis. His love for music transcended generations, and he delighted in sharing experiences with his children's friends, treating them like his own.
As a family man, Steve’s adventures with his wife included travels to Las Vegas to see Elvis and visits to casinos in Tunica, Mississippi. They also delighted in simple pleasures, such as picnicking at parks and spending quality time visiting their children and grandchildren. A proud grandfather, Steve witnessed significant milestones in his grandchildren's lives, including graduations and the joy of welcoming great-grandchildren. He always cherished those precious moments, celebrating their accomplishments with unwavering enthusiasm.
Steve was well-known for his generous spirit and his ability to create friendships wherever he went, being affectionately referred to by friends of his children for his kindness. He was an avid supporter of the Colts and Notre Dame football, and he could often be found scouring thrift stores for VHS tapes and DVDs, fueled by his passion for music and cinema.
Despite battling colon cancer for over five years, Steve faced his illness with strength and endured no pain in his final moments. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley, and their children, Deborah Kay Gamble (Thomas) and Dale Alan Schafer (Tonya). The joy of his life will continue through his grandchildren, Dustin Matthew Schafer (Audrey), Ashley Nicole Liddy (Kyle), Nicci Renee Schafer, and Courtney Layne Gamble, along with his great-grandchildren, Laura Elayne Schafer and Charlotte Grace Liddy. He is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of love and compassion.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Mary Schafer, along with his brother Gerald Schafer and sister Barbara Schafer.
His proudest accomplishments included not only being a loving husband, father, and grandfather but also helping to organize donations for a plaque in downtown Indianapolis that commemorates Elvis Presley’s last concert. Steve’s enriching life, marked by deep connections and shared experiences, leaves behind a profound impact on all who knew him. His memory will be cherished and celebrated by many, as he is forever in their hearts.
