Steven Edward Carpenter left this earth bound for glory on August 28, 2012. He was born 66 years ago in St. Francis Beech Grove Hospital, the first son of George Edward (Eddie) and LaVonne Carpenter. His childhood involved many happy hours playing at Longacre Park and Pool where his parents worked in the summer as lifeguards and swimming instructors.
He had a quirky, offbeat sense of humor which captivated his nieces and nephews at an early age. Steve loved singing and was a regular performer on Karaoke night at Marty's, a local Southside bar.
He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and an usher at Sunday Mass, and also attended a faith group associated with the church. In his spare time, Steve volunteered for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and also drove a van for the Red Cross. He had a sense of dedication to all his commitments, including his friends and family.
Steve retired in December 2011 after a 46 year career at IUPUI, most recently at Nutrition and Dietetics at IU Health. He received several commendations and had a perfect attendance record.
He will be greatly missed by his surviving sister, Tess (JB) Baker; brother Casey (Caryn) Carpenter; dearly beloved niece, Beth Wayt; other nieces and nephews, Aaron (Nicole McMurry) Reese; Will (Wanda) Hendrickson and Joe (Darlene) Hendrickson of Idaho; grand nieces and nephews: Sarah Hendrickson, Seattle; Billy Hendrickson, Idaho; Eva Hendrickson, Germany; Kathy Carpenter; Kim Carpenter (Tim Lewis); and great-grandnephew Drake Alexander Lewis.
Funeral arrangements have been made with Flanner and Buchanan- Decatur, 5463 Kentucky Avenue, where visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm at on Thursday, August 30. A Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name Catholic Church will follow on Friday August 31 at 10:00 am with a short visitation from 9-9:45 am
