Stephen Dow Schmutte of Indianapolis, IN passed away peacefully in his home on October 1, 2025 at the age of 63 years old.
Steve was born May 8, 1962 in Indianapolis, IN, the only son of the late Charles and Mary Joan (nee Trueblood) Schmutte. After attending St. Lawrence Catholic School and St. Pius X Catholic School, he graduated from Bishop Chatard High School in 1980.
Steve spent the majority of his working career as a property manager with Kirkpatrick Management Company in Indianapolis. Later in life, he would become an arborist for Ken-Cut Tree Service where he could enjoy the outdoors and foster his love of trees.
Steve was a loving father of three sons who he had with the late Pamela Wagner Johnson. They raised their family on the northside of Indianapolis where they were parishioners of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Besides his family, Steve’s greatest joy was spending time outdoors. As a man who dreaded the confines of inside, he much preferred to spend his time canoeing, cross-country skiing, camping, fishing, and hiking among other outdoor activities. He loved to share these hobbies with his family, sometimes reluctantly on their part.
Steve loved sports having spent many years at the track in the month of May. He was famous in his household for yelling at the TV during Colts and Pacers games as if the players could hear him. However, even more than watching professional sports, Steve loved to watch his sons compete in their sports throughout their childhoods.
Steve is survived by his sons Drew (Skylar), Grant, and Shane Schmutte; sisters Lynn (Jim) Thompson and Gayle (Jim) Leonard; granddaughters Charlotte and Eloise; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Laura Schmutte.
A visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan – Broad Ripple on Monday, October 13th at 6-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 14th at Christ the King Catholic Church.
