Stephen R. Stelzel, 68, of Speedway, went home to glory from his houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake, "his heaven on earth to his heaven in the sky." He was born on January 21, 1945 in Indianapolis to the late Emil Stelzel and Josephine Vogt. Steve was a 1963 graduate of Ben Davis High School and served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a former Wayne Township Volunteer Firefighter and retired from Allison Gas Turbine. Steve was a member of the VFW #2839 and also a life member of the American Legion Post 500 where he served as a Past Commander and Club Room Manager. He was a member of the Murat Shrine, the Evergreen Oriental Masonic Lodge 500 and an official member of International Association of Turtles. Steve is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sandi Stelzel; daughters, Natalie (Kim) Moore, Stephanie (Kevin) Saylor and Amanda Stelzel; step-daughter, Annette (Mike) Milner; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Kate (Don) Inman and Joann Hobbs, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Steve will be held at Flanner and Buchanan- Speedway on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 2pm. Visitation will be Friday evening at the funeral home from 4-7pm, with a Masonic service at 7pm and a Past Commanders service immediately following. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
