Stephen Ray Sexton
December 14, 1964 – October 5, 2022 Stephen Ray Sexton, 57, of Plainfield Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 5, 2022. Steve was born on December 14, 1964, to John Lee, and Judith Ann (Nugent) Sexton in Indianapolis. Steve was the oldest of their four children. He was devoted to his family & friends. He was always there for moral support, and absolutely no one was going to hurt his family unless they wanted to contend with “Moose”. Steve had a very strong work ethic that he got from his father. Steve was even known to have said “the hardest part of working, wasn’t the labor. The hardest part is the clocking in. Once you’re clocked in the rest of the day is a breeze.” This work ethic is something that he instilled in all of his children. Steve worked as a truck driver for most of his adult life, including working for the Indianapolis Public Schools from 1996 until his retirement in 2013. Steve loved fishing with his family and friends, as long as you didn’t out fish him (we’ll give him this one, he wasn’t out fished too often). Steve was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts. There wasn’t a Sunday in the fall or early winter that he wasn’t watching them, and then later that evening complaining that they were losing. Among his other favorite past times were traveling, cookouts, nature, camping, swimming, playing cards, horseshoes, pool, and playing games with his friends whom he also viewed as family. Steve is survived by his wife of 13 years, Michelle (Poland); his 5 children Wayne (Angela) Sexton of Francesville, Indiana; Elizabeth (Phillip) Ely of Indianapolis; Benjamin Johnson of Plainfield; Blake Johnson of Avon; Bryce (Lizbeth) Johnson of El Paso, Texas. Steve is also survived by his mother Judith; Grandmother Flossie (Medlen) Nugent; granddaughters Isabella Ely, Kennadie Ely, and Emersyn Johnson; siblings Jon ‘Scott’ (Angela) Sexton of Indianapolis, Kimberly (Ronald) Watts of Indianapolis, and Jason (Angel) Sexton of Anderson. Also, his multiple aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews, and friends. All of which he loved dearly. Steve was preceded in death by his father John Sexton, maternal grandfather Oscar Nugent, paternal grandparents Leander & Regina (Begley) Sexton and various aunts, uncles, and friends. Steve near the end of his life would say “Don’t grieve for me, I’ve had a good life. I’ve had jobs, love, money, houses, cars, friends, and family. I may not have been a financially rich man, but I had the best life I could have asked for.” Steve also specifically asked to include this: “Last but not least, he is survived by the love of his life, the one who turned his life completely around Michelle (Mimi). He could never have made it without her. If you ever had a doubt if he loved her and she loved him, just look at their eyes when they looked at each other. Her love, ability, and way she took care of him added years to his life. For that he is eternally grateful to his love, Michelle” In lieu of flowers, please donate a hug to someone in need. Steve said “never turn down a hug”
