Stephen C. McNutt

Stephen C. McNutt, affectionately known as Steve, passed away on September 27, 2025, at Avon Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Avon, Indiana. He was born on November 7, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, but grew up in Daleville, Indiana, where he formed many of his earliest memories.

Steve dedicated much of his life to serving others through his distinguished career in law. He spent many years as an Indiana Deputy Attorney General, a Hendricks County Deputy Prosecutor, and a Marion County Public Defender. In addition to his public service, he engaged in the private practice of law in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he made a lasting impact on both his clients and colleagues.

Education was a significant cornerstone in Steve's life. He graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Economics before earning his Juris Doctor degree from the McKinney School of Law. His commitment to learning and legal practice underscored his dedication to justice and community service.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Steve was a man of diverse interests and passions. He cherished the time spent with his family at Crystal Lake in Beulah, Michigan, and at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where many joyful summers were spent. Known for his love of big dogs, Steve had a total of seven dogs during his adulthood, six of whom were rescue dogs, reflecting his compassionate nature. He often took great pride in his music collection and stereo system, sometimes playing it at volumes that brought a smile—or a playful admonition—from his wife.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Marvel McNutt; son, David Patrick McNutt; sister, Maureen Nelson (Walter); brother, Paul L. McNutt, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Howard P. Marvel (Mary) and Norman L. Foster; and sister-in-law, Janet Marvel (Albert Fowerbaugh). He also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Paul L. McNutt; mother, Gertrude Dougan McNutt; and sister-in-law, Carol Marvel Foster.

A memorial service to honor Steve's legacy will be held on October 11, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan in Zionsville, Indiana, beginning at 2:00 PM, with visitation following from 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate Steve's life and share their memories of a man who brought joy and compassion to all who knew him.
