Stephen LeRoy Bates, a devoted family man and respected business owner, passed away on July 11, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on July 21, 1951, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Stephen lived a life filled with love, dedication, and commitment to his faith.
Stephen was the proud owner and operator of multiple businesses, including a furniture store, a restaurant, and an arcade. These showcased his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for quality craftsmanship. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Penn State, which laid the foundation for his successful career.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Stephen served his country with honor. His love for God was evident in his daily routine as he made a point to read his Bible each day. An artist at heart enjoyed painting portraits, capturing the beauty around him through his artistic endeavors. He was delighted in listening to instrumental music, particularly compositions featuring brass instruments.
In addition to his professional and creative pursuits, Stephen was an extremely passionate supporter of the New York Giants Football Team. Known as Coach Pop, he enjoyed co-coaching his grandsons football team, at Decatur Youth Football League, with his son.
Stephen was Pop to anyone and everyone he meant, from stranger to blood. Most importantly, Stephen cherished the time he spent with his family and took great joy in being Pop Pop to all his grandchildren.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Lisa Y. Tsaltharis-Bates; his children: Trinity Bates and her husband Alfie, along with their four-legged baby Liam, Corey Bates and his wife Kirsty, and their children, Eliyott, Juliyan, Ethan, Connor, Kristian Bates, and his children, Dwayne, (Christian the girl) Zaiidi, Nikki Foster, and her husband SSG Jonathan, and their children, Elliana, Lillian, Darnell Bates, and his children, Aubrei, Darnell II, and Amyiah. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores Mae East, and by his grandchildren Khaleesi and Frankie, Jr.
A memorial service celebrating Stephen's life will be held on July 25, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan - Decatur Township, Indianapolis, Indiana. Family and friends are invited to gather at 3:00 PM to honor and remember a man whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
