Stephen Lee ‘Steve’ Ashman, 88, Westfield, IN peacefully passed away Monday, February 19, 2024 at his home. A native of Evansville, IN, Steve was born July 12, 1935, the son of Frank Louis and Grace Marie (Lesh) Ashman.

He was a 1953 graduate of Bosse High School and earned his B.S. in Industrial Management from Purdue University in 1962. He served in the US Marine Corps for three years including overseas duty in Japan where he climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji.

 Steve retired from Allison Transmission where he worked in various engineering departments. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Steve had the opportunity to test drive various vehicles all over the world including tanks, buses, garbage trucks, and airport rescue trucks to evaluate their transmissions and create innovative performance solutions.

Steve loved road biking and would take 200-mile trips with his son and loved to fish with his grandchildren.  His hobbies included: sailing, building model airplanes, and reading.  He was an avid tennis player for 30 years. He enjoyed playing cards, board games, and never missed the opportunity to tell his grandchildren a joke!

 Preceding him in death are his parents and sister, Joyce (Rev. Bill) Mathys.

Surviving are his children: Greg (Suzanne) Ashman of Pittsburgh, PA and Karen (Mike) Ackerman of Carmel, IN. Grandchildren: Stephanie Ashman; Rob (JoAnna) Ashman; Walter (Maggie) Ackerman; Nolan Ackerman; and step grandchildren Stacy Ackerman and Sara Cooke. Also, surviving at home Janet Ashman, beloved wife of 38 years; stepchildren Brett Word of Parkesburg, PA; Chad (Rachael) Word of Douglasville, GA; and step grandchildren Levi Word and Olivia Word.

All who knew Steve loved him and appreciated his giving heart, honor, integrity, and meticulous attention to detail.  He will be missed, and his memory cherished in our hearts.

 No services will be held, and his cremains will be spread by the family per his wishes.
