Shirley Pickett
December 26, 1947 – September 22, 2026
In Loving Memory of a Remarkable Woman
Shirley Pickett was born on December 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to Catherine Neyland and Luther Pickett. As their firstborn child, Shirley began a life that would be defined by strength, independence, determination, and an unwavering devotion to those she loved. On September 22, 2026, Shirley departed this life at the age of 78, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy that will continue through the generations of her family.
Shirley was a woman of remarkable character, undeniable presence, and unmistakable style. Strong-willed, outspoken, and fiercely independent, she believed in speaking her mind and standing firmly behind her convictions. Those who knew her understood that her honesty was rarely accompanied by sugarcoating. If you asked Shirley for her opinion, you could count on receiving exactly what she thought. Beneath that straightforward exterior was a deeply loyal, protective, and generous woman whose actions often spoke louder than words.
Shirley appreciated the finer things in life and carried herself with a sense of elegance that was entirely her own. She had an extraordinary love for beautiful clothing, fashionable shoes, and exquisite jewelry. Her appearance reflected her personality: polished, confident, and never ordinary. She believed in presenting herself well, and she did so with pride. Her love of fashion was more than an appreciation for beautiful things; it was an expression of her individuality.
Family held a significant place in Shirley's life. She demonstrated her love through thoughtful gestures, practical assistance, unwavering support, and a willingness to tell those closest to her what they sometimes needed, rather than wanted, to hear. Whether offering advice, lending a helping hand, or making certain that someone she cared about had what they needed, Shirley expressed her affection in ways that were meaningful and lasting.
Shirley's life was not defined simply by the years she lived, but by the strength she displayed, the wisdom she shared, and the lasting impressions she made upon those fortunate enough to know her. She possessed a discerning spirit, a sharp sense of humor, and an ability to leave an impression without ever needing to command attention.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Catherine Neyland and Luther Pickett; her sisters, Michelle L. Pickett, Marie Pickett, and Lucinda Pickett; her great-aunt, Louise Pickett; and her nephew, Herbert D. Lambert.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two children, Kenyatta Rule Sr. and Makeba Rule; her beloved grandsons, Kenyatta Rule Jr. (Paige) and D'Andre Rule (Brianna); and her great-grandson, Kenyatta J. Rule, son of Kenyatta Rule Jr. and Paige Rule.
She is also survived by her siblings, Lenoa Barnetti, Louise Pickett, Shelia Pickett, Luther Pickett Jr., and Renee Kyles Pickett-Holmes (Linda); her cherished longtime family friend, Joann Hunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends, too numerous to name, whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Shirley will be remembered for her strength, her elegance, her unmistakable personality, and the love she demonstrated in her own extraordinary way. Her words, her wisdom, her humor, and the countless memories she created will remain with those who loved her.
Though her presence will be deeply missed, the legacy of Shirley Pickett will endure in the hearts, memories, and lives of those she leaves behind.
