Obituary

Shirley J. Mellor Tichenor, beloved mother, Nana, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, at the age of 94.

Shirley was a loving Mom and Nana who treasured her family above all else. She is survived by her three children, David (Jamie) Mellor, Karen (Phil) Chambers, and Sandy (Keith) Stuckert; her sister, Patricia Shipman; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

Shirley had many passions that brought joy to her life. She was a master gardener who loved tending to her gardens and watching the birds that visited them. Her gardens reflected the care, patience, and beauty she brought to so many things in life.

She was also an avid card and bridge player and enjoyed the friendships and fellowship that came with playing. Shirley loved to cook and was an excellent seamstress. She shared her talents with others as a substitute Home Economics teacher at Arlington High School, where she especially enjoyed teaching cooking and sewing.

Education was important to Shirley. She attended Drexel University in Philadelphia for two years before marrying. Later, she returned to school and completed her diploma at Butler University in Indianapolis. One of her proudest moments was having her children attend her graduation ceremony and celebrate that accomplishment with her.

Of all the things Shirley enjoyed, perhaps her favorite pastime was vacationing with her family in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, a quaint seaside town that held a very special place in her heart. She loved the beach, the town, and especially the bird sanctuary. Those family trips created treasured memories that have continued through the generations. To this day, her family still loves returning to Stone Harbor, carrying on a tradition that Shirley cherished so dearly.

Shirley's life was filled with family, friendship, creativity, nature, and countless memories that will continue to live on in those she loved. Her family will forever treasure the love she gave, the lessons she taught, and the traditions she created.
