Shirley Hale, 88, went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2024. She is reunited with her husband Donald Hale, who passed away in 2001. She was born to Tom and Flora Key near Birmingham, Alabama in 1935. When she was two, her family moved to Indianapolis, where she lived most of her life until moving to Melbourne, FL in 2020.
Shirley spent her life serving others through her family, church and community. While raising her family she and Don were active members of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was involved with several women’s groups. She was also active in local politics.
When her children were in high school, she went back to work and spent more than 20 years as the director of poor relief for the Washington Township Trustee’s office, connecting clients with emergency financial support and other resources.
Shirley was the ultimate hostess. From large family dinners to parties with friends, she made the Hale home a lively gathering place. She loved gardening and was an avid bridge player. She and her husband had a close friend group that spanned more than 40 years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sister Betty Klingler. She is survived by her sister Debi (Keith) McCoy, her children Jim (Sue) Hale, Donna Genrich, Dwight (Debbie) Hale, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
She will be laid to rest next to her husband at a family service at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, donate to a food bank or other charity that serves your local community.
