Sheila Jane Adsit

January 16, 1940 — August 3, 2022

Indianapolis, Indiana

Sheila Jane Adsit, 82, passed away August 3, 2022. She was born January 16, 1940, in Muscatine, Iowa to the late Fred and Mary Peters. Sheila married Joseph Diederich in 1959 and had 5 children: Lisa, Joel, Amy, Carrie, and Chris.

Sheila married Robert Adsit in 1981 and together they resided in the Woodruff/Springdale neighborhood for nearly 40 years, until they moved to assisted living in 2020.  She and Bob had a love that would last 4 decades until Bob died of COVID-19 January 8, 2021.

Sheila was a feminist, political activist, poet, community organizer, mental health advocate, and environmentalist. Sheila was called to help those in need. She and Bob often welcomed the poor or homeless into their home: offering warm meals, clothing, and a place to rest.

Sheila loved to do crosswords, garden, bake, read scripture, sing, and dance with her beloved Bob, but most of all, she loved being surrounded by family and friends: sharing easy laughs and deep conversations.

Sheila was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Adsit, her parents, Fred and Mary Peters, her brother Bruce and sister Marilyn. She is survived by her children Lisa Sauce, Joel (Teresa) Diederich, Amy (Fritz) Jost, Carrie (Karl Stier) Blankenbaker, and Chris (Shu-er) Diederich, and bonus daughter, Rebecca Parks; and grandchildren, Jake, Hannah, Sydney, Lily, Felix, Josephine, Cooper, Raphiel; and bonus grandchildren Jessica and Jerald; and bonus great grands Kamila and Nadia. She is also survived by her siblings, Eric, Susie, Ardith, and Jeanne.

The family will have a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sheila’s name to The Miracle Place which was dear to Sheila and Bob.  Their mission: For all who come to find refuge, all who are severely tried may be comforted, all who are lonely find companionship, and those without hope find a renewed spirit.
