Sharon Durm

April 12, 1944 — December 21, 2021

Carmel, IN

Sharon K. Durm, age 77 of Carmel, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, December 21st, 2021.  Born April 12, 1944 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Herbert and Rosenell Hosey, Sharon spent her childhood and high school years in Muncie, where she graduated from Muncie Burris High School with the class of 1962. After graduation, she attended Ball State University to pursue her undergraduate degree in Education. She would later earn her Master’s in Education from Indiana University – Fort Wayne.  On August 21, 1965, she married the love of her life, Paul Joseph Durm, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Muncie. Thereafter, they moved together to New Haven, Indiana where she began teaching elementary school.  Sharon loved being a wife and mother, and she left teaching to stay at home and raise their three children, Steven, David, and Karen.  As the children grew, Sharon would return to substitute teaching and selling Mary Kay Cosmetics, before settling in side-by-side with Paul as the office manager in the Durm Insurance Agency.

Sharon and Paul would later welcome seven grandchildren into the world, and they would love hosting them and their families at their home in Fort Wayne and their lake house on Lake Gage.  Sharon’s happiest moments were spent watching her children and grandchildren together.  Christmas was very special to Sharon, in particular. The family was always treated to a magical Christmas and the grandchildren delighted in all the many gifts Grandma and Grandpa gave them.

Paul and Sharon enjoyed traveling the world together, and they especially loved cruises.  The Durms created amazing memories traveling with friends and family.  They also spent time in Sarasota, Florida each winter with dear friends.  Sharon was a devout Catholic and throughout her health battles over the last nine years, Sharon’s faith grew even deeper.  To those closest to Sharon, the Lord was an obvious presence.  Sharon was an avid reader and loved to read everything from novels to People Magazine.  She could often be found reading in her favorite spot at their lake house.

Sharon’s family would like to thank Dr. Emily Szewczyk for her countless hours of devoted care and the staff of the Stratford Assisted Living facility for their patience, love and caring.

Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Durm and sister, Jean Smith.  She is survived by her children, Steven A. (wife, Brandy) Durm, David P. (wife, Aimee) Durm and Karen K. (husband, Scott) Bailey; grandchildren, Molly and Dylan Durm, Cameron and Ryan Durm, Jacob, Alexander and Preston Bailey; brother, Fr. Keith Hosey; and sister, Colleen Cousineau.

Private family services will be held on Monday, December 27th at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
