Sarah “Sally” (Winkler) Green of Carmel, IN, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, at the age of 93. She was born, one of the Winkler Triplets, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, on August 17, 1932, to parents, Herman and Gertrude (Fluery) Winkler. She and her sisters, Mary and Sue, were inseparable and enjoyed a blessed childhood with many fond memories she loved to share.
Sally grew up and went to school in Lebanon, IN. After graduation, she attended Purdue University where she received her Bachelors degree in Home Economics. It was at Purdue that she met Fritz Shumaker, with whom they would start a large family of their own. Together they had seven children - Mary Shumaker, Bill (Janie) Shumaker, John (Margie) Shumaker, Dan (Kim) Shumaker, Patrick Shumaker, Mike (Jenni) Shumaker and Tom (Deb) Shumaker - all raised on the northwest side of Indianapolis.
A devoted mother, she found herself busy driving the children around to school, sports and other activities. She went through multiple wood paneled station wagons over the years and always insisted on listening to her own music while shuttling the kids around. She was a proud member of the Home Economics Guild and worked for nearly 30 years at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. Over the years, Sally was able to travel to multiple countries and enjoyed the many adventures she had with various friends and family. She also loved the arts. Sally enjoyed attending plays, musicals and visiting museums. Sally was a Purdue Boilermaker fan and enjoyed attending frequent basketball, football and wrestling events. She also enjoyed attending the Indianapolis 500 with her family.
Many would describe Sally as a “sweet lady” who prided herself on etiquette and proper grammar. She never hesitated correcting her children or grandchildren, even when it became difficult for her to communicate. She had a wonderful sense of fashion and prided herself on being well put together with jewelry to match. Sally loved large gatherings and meals with her family that always included a cocktail or two. After the meal, she would kindly excuse herself as she reapplied a fresh coat of lipstick.
She is survived by her 6 children; their father, Fritz; thirteen grandchildren - Brian (Katie), Laura (Andy), Emily (Dustin), Luke, Glen, Adam (Kourtney), Caroline, Claire, Jack, Sam, Ben, Emma and Sarah Shumaker - and her 6 great-grandchildren - Jobe, Christian, Solomon, Maeve, Connor & Madeline. To all, she was known as Grandma Sally or Gigi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sue Kettlehut; husbands, Ed Arrowsmith & Paul Green and son, Patrick Shumaker.
Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Children's Museum, St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, or The Alzheimer's Association.
