Sandra Sue Renner-Waters, 73, of Indianapolis, passed away July 19th. She was born on December 3, 1948 in Columbus, Indiana to Norris and Jeanne (Parrott) Renner, both of whom preceded her in death.
She was a 1967 graduate of Columbus North High School and attended Indiana University, Bloomington for the 1967-68 academic year. During her youth, she was active in the Masonic Organization Rainbow Girls and Girl Scouts. As a Girl Scout, she was a lifeguard at the Columbus Girl Scout Camp while in high school, and participated in an adventure to Mexico, sparking her love of travel. Her journeys took her to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Canada, and Okinawa, as well as through many of our states.
In July 2003, Sandra married the loving soul who had so romantically pursued her, Hurley (“Gene”) Waters. They shared 18 years of a compatible, loving marriage. Gene preceded Sandy in death.
While working as a unit secretary at Methodist Hospital, she served as the catcher on their competitive softball team, and retired after 41 years of service. Not feeling that her vitality had retired, Sandy went to work for Western Bowl where she also participated in weekly bowling leagues; she also served as one of the directors of the “Indiana 600 Club”.
Sandy had a multitude of hobbies and interests; she loved nature and enjoyed camping in Indiana’s state parks. Sandy was a superb cook and baker, and enjoyed sharing her tasty creations. She was also a keen card player who never turned down an opportunity to show her skills at get-togethers with family and friends. Sandy crocheted and knit blankets, hats, scarves and doilies for many; she was a true “giver”.
Sandy is survived by beloved family and friends: June Gilliland, Cindy (Marty) Crowe, Melinda Torrence, Becky Drennen, Ricki Martin, and numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sandy was preceded in death by her nephews, Matthew Eric Smith and James Olmsted.
Visitation for Sandra will be on Tuesday, July 26th at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East from 11AM-1PM. Her service will begin at 1PM with long-time family friend, Rev. Dr. L. Wayne Smith, presiding. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Washington Park East Cemetery.
